Hodeskalle

$3500

Vege tanned leather + hand set studs

50" x 50"

2017

Hodeskalle marks the beginning of an exploration into leather, metal, and image — the first piece in a collection built around the collision of traditional handcraft and graphic impact. Created from dome studs hand set into hand-dyed and airbrushed vegetable-tanned leather, the work transforms a skull into something tactile, weathered, and ceremonial.

The image carries a darker, more ancient energy than a clean graphic symbol. Its rusted studs feel unearthed rather than polished — corroded points of light emerging from the leather like remnants of armor, bone, or relic. The skull does not sit passively on the surface; it appears to rise out of it, held together through repetition, pressure, and time.

Up close, Hodeskalle becomes a study in material decay and physical presence. The leather reveals its grain, scars, tonal shifts, and airbrushed depth, while the oxidized metal studs create an uneven topography across the surface. Each dome catches light differently, creating a worn, flickering rhythm that feels both deliberate and imperfectly human.

From a distance, the individual studs dissolve into a halftone image. The skull becomes clearer, more iconic, and more confrontational — a memento mori built from texture rather than ink, from metal rather than line. It exists between craft object and warning symbol, between mortality and adornment.

As the first work in the series, Hodeskalle established the visual language that would define the collection: leather as skin, studs as pixels, image as object. It is raw, imperfect, and ritualistic — a piece that feels forged rather than illustrated.
